Atlas vs DocuSign

Atlas gives you unlimited free e-sign, unlimited seats, and every integration on every plan, for a two-person startup or a Fortune 500 legal team. DocuSign charges per seat and meters envelopes: 100 per user per year on most plans, then $3.00 to $7.80 each, per its own support docs. Atlas is also the only one of the two that will run your contracts for you.

TL;DR

  • Atlas e-sign is free and unlimited. DocuSign caps envelopes at 100 per user per year, then charges $3.00 to $7.80 each.
  • Atlas has no seat pricing. DocuSign prices every plan per seat, with reported minimums of 2 to 5 seats.
  • Atlas includes API and automation sends on every plan. DocuSign IAM caps automation sends at 100 per user per year, even on "unlimited" plans.
  • Atlas scales to enterprise with roles, workspaces, audit certificates, and volume pricing. No per-seat math at 10,000 users.
  • Only Atlas offers a managed option: people who run your contracts, from $1,500 a month.

How much does DocuSign actually cost?

More than the sticker price. DocuSign bills per seat, caps envelopes at 100 per user per year, and charges $3.00 to $7.80 for each envelope past the cap.

DocuSign eSignature plans are priced per seat and cap envelopes. On annual plans you get 100 envelopes per user per year. An envelope counts against the cap once sent, whether or not anyone signs it.

Past the cap, DocuSign charges per envelope. Its own support documentation lists overage rates from $3.00 (Standard Annual, prepaid) to $7.80 (Business Pro Monthly, pay as you go). Third-party pricing guides also report a 2-seat minimum on Standard and Business Pro.

Atlas has none of these meters. E-sign is free and unlimited on every plan, including Free, with unlimited seats.

What does DocuSign IAM cost?

IAM starts at $150 to $240 a month in practice because of 3-seat minimums, and its "unlimited envelopes" exclude API, bulk, and form sends.

IAM (Intelligent Agreement Management) is the DocuSign platform closest to Atlas workflow automation. It is still priced per seat. Standard and Professional require 3 seats, so real entry is $150/mo and $240/mo on annual billing.

The fine print matters. "Unlimited envelopes" on IAM Standard and Professional only covers sends from the DocuSign web and mobile apps. Automation sends through Web Forms, PowerForms, Bulk Send, and API integrations are capped at 100 per user per year on annual plans.

If you automate sending, the unlimited plan is not unlimited. Atlas includes API, MCP, and template sends on every plan with no send cap. Paid Atlas plans meter one thing: workflow runs, where Atlas handles a contract from intake to filed.

Enterprise

Does Atlas work at enterprise scale?

Yes. Atlas has no seat pricing, so a 10,000-person company pays nothing extra for users, and the Managed Contracts Department scales with your contract volume.

Atlas is built for a five-person startup and a Fortune 500 procurement team on the same plan structure. Seats are unlimited on every plan. Adding your whole legal, sales, and finance org costs nothing.

Access is controlled with admin and member roles, teams, and workspaces. Each organization sees only its own agreements. Signers see only the fields meant for them. Every signed document carries an audit certificate that records who signed, when, and from where, and the signed PDF is hashed with SHA-256 so any later change is detectable.

Developers and agents get the same surface on every plan: a REST API, an MCP server, an append-only event log you can poll, idempotency keys, and templates. The Business plan prices workflow runs by volume. Outbound webhooks are in development. SAML SSO and SCIM provisioning are planned but not yet available.

When the contract load outgrows your team, the Managed Contracts Department runs intake, drafting, routing, chasing, filing, and reporting for you. It is priced by company size and contract volume, so it works as an outsourced contracts function that grows with you instead of a headcount line.

Managed service

Is there a managed option?

Only from Atlas. No competitor on these pages bundles people who run your contracts; Atlas does, from $1,500 a month.

DocuSign sells software plus implementation services. It has no offering where people run your contracts for you.

No software vendor in this category bundles humans who run your contracts. If you want the work done for you, the rest of the market offers two options: ALSPs like Axiom at published rates of $150 to $350 per hour, or a contracts administrator hire at roughly $86,000 to $105,000 a year fully loaded ($7,200 or more a month).

The Atlas Managed Contracts Department starts at $1,500 a month, priced by company size and contract volume. That is about one fifth of a loaded contracts admin hire, software included. The Atlas team runs each contract from intake to filed: intake by email, Slack, or form, drafting from your approved templates, routing and chasing, approvals routed to whoever you name including in-house or outside counsel, filing executed copies into your CRM, drive, and finance tools, renewal and obligation tracking, and reporting built around what you track. During negotiation Atlas coordinates counsel's redlines and edits with the other side. Atlas does not give legal advice.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Atlas cheaper than DocuSign?

Yes, at any volume and any team size. Atlas e-sign is free and unlimited. DocuSign caps envelopes at 100 per user per year and charges $3.00 to $7.80 per extra envelope, per its own support docs. For workflow automation, Atlas Starter is $99.99/mo flat with unlimited seats. DocuSign IAM is per seat with 3-seat minimums on most plans.

Does DocuSign limit envelopes?

Yes. eSignature plans include 100 envelopes per user per year on annual billing, and an envelope is consumed on send even if nobody signs. IAM Standard and Professional advertise unlimited envelopes, but only through the web and mobile apps. API, bulk, and form sends are capped at 100 per user per year. Atlas has no envelope limits on any plan.

What is the best free e-sign tool?

Atlas. It offers unlimited free e-sign forever: unlimited documents, signers, and team members on every plan, with PDF and DOCX support, AI field detection, reminders, and an audit certificate on every signed document. DocuSign has no free plan beyond a limited trial. Its cheapest plan is $10/mo for 5 envelopes a month.

Do signers need an account?

With Atlas, never. Signers get a link, sign, and are done. No signup, no app.

Does DocuSign offer a managed contracts service?

No. DocuSign sells software and implementation services. If you want humans to run intake, drafting, routing, chasing, and filing, the alternatives are an ALSP at $150 to $350 per hour, a contracts admin hire at roughly $86,000 to $105,000 a year loaded, or the Atlas Managed Contracts Department from $1,500/mo.

Is DocuSign a better fit for large enterprises?

No. Large companies are where DocuSign seat and envelope math costs the most. Atlas has unlimited seats on every plan, admin and member roles, teams and workspaces, per-organization isolation, an audit certificate with a SHA-256 hash on every signed document, and a REST API and MCP server on every plan. The Business plan prices workflow runs by volume, and the Managed Contracts Department scales as an outsourced contracts function priced by company size and contract volume. Outbound webhooks are in development. SAML SSO and SCIM are planned but not yet available.

Can I move from DocuSign to Atlas without a migration project?

Yes. Atlas has no implementation fee and no onboarding period. Upload a PDF or DOCX, Atlas detects the fields, and you send. Templates are unlimited on every plan, so you can rebuild your DocuSign templates in Atlas at no cost. If you want help, the Managed Contracts Department does the setup and runs the process.

Keep the software. Skip the caps.

Unlimited e-sign is free. You pay when Atlas handles the rest.
